Refunds for US-to-Dominican Republic plane tickets
up 127%
The number of refunds for plane tickets from the US to the Dominican Republic skyrocketed 127% so far this year, compared to the same period last year, amid the recent string of tourist deaths and illnesses in the embattled country, according to findings released this week.
Research conducted by the Airlines Reporting Corp. (ARC) reveals that the massive leap in refunds occurred between Jan. 1 and June 23 of this year, according to a statement released by the organization Monday.
In June — when the rash of tourist fatalities in the country first began to come to light — refunds for flights booked from the US to the Dominican Republic increased 77 percent, compared to the same month last year.
In addition, the number of air ticket purchases made in the US for travel to the Dominican Republic dipped by 10 percent compared to the same period last year, the organization said.
Even travelers outside the US are reluctant to travel to the Dominican Republic, the results reveal.
The number of ticket refunds for non-US travelers heading to the Dominican Republic since the beginning of the year has increased by 8 percent, the research shows.
And the total number of ticket purchases from other countries to the Caribbean nation has decreased by 28 percent during the same period, according to the findings.

Schumer: Justice Department Agency Should Investigate Dominican Republic Deaths
The Senate's top Democrat said Sunday that the U.S. government should step up efforts to investigate the deaths of at least eight Americans in the Dominican Republic this year.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives should lend support to the FBI and local law enforcement, said Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., noting the agency has offices in the Caribbean and the technical and forensic expertise that could aid the investigation.
Family members of the tourists who died have called on authorities to investigate any possible connections. Relatives have raised the possibility that the deaths may have been caused by adulterated alcohol or misused pesticides.
ATF spokeswoman April Langwell said the Treasury Department primarily handles investigations involving potentially tainted alcohol. But she said ATF has offered its assistance and would work with other law enforcement agencies to keep Americans safe.
NEW YORK, United States.- The Minister of Tourism, Francisco Javier García, met this Friday with more than twenty tour operators from this city as part of his strategy to counter the misinformation campaign that was mounted against Dominican tourism.
He guaranteed that the Dominican Republic will succeed in the negative campaign of which it is a victim.
The official explained to the entrepreneurs the reality of the Caribbean country, considered the leader of tourism in the region.
"I can guarantee you that the Dominican Republic is a safe destination and that it is not true that there is any avalanche of deaths and much less mysterious deaths," said the Minister of Tourism.
The official informed them of the effort made by the Dominican government to mitigate the effects of the disclosure of negative information against the country.
At the meeting with the Minister of Tourism, representatives of the companies Apple Leisura Grroup, Boiokit.com, Expedia Group, Flight Center, Jetset Vacation and Vacation Express, among others, participated.
The tour operators, who participated in a New York hotel, appreciated the explanations offered by the Minister of Tourism.
They also expressed their willingness to continue working to sell the Dominican Republic.
The tour operators, who cover the entire North American market, also let the Tourism Minister know how much the Dominican destination represents in the volume of operations they handle.

Khalid Adkins, who was staying in Punta Cana, tried to return home Tuesday, relatives told Fox News, but the crew on the flight removed him after seeing how ill he was. A Denver NBC affiliate, 9 News, reported that the daughter with whom he was vacationing said he started complaining about feeling unwell on Sunday, and got progressively worse.
“We found out this morning that he passed away last night! I’m at a loss for words, we have no explanation of what happened, all they will say is he got sick,” the family wrote Wednesday on a GoFundMe page they set up to raise funds to rush his body's return to the United States.

Teen tourist falls into coma on Dominican Republic trip: report

The teen’s hospitalization couldn’t have come at a worse time for the DR, which has seen a disturbing trend of tourist deaths and illnesses being reported recently. Health minister Rafael Sánchez Cárdenas insists the cases are unrelated.
“What do we have here? Tourists who arrive with preexisting conditions and die in this country as they do in all countries,” Cárdenas told CBS News on Monday through a translator.
The FBI is looking into whether any of the reported deaths are linked. Agents have been running toxicology tests on resort minibars to see if tainted alcohol is possibly to blame. They’ve honed in on at least three cases — all of which involved tourists dying at the popular Bahia Principe hotel chain.
Dominican-American Congressman Says He's 'Concerned' After Deaths, but They Shouldn't Stop Tourist Visits
First of all, I’m concerned about the deaths,” Rep. Adriano Espaillat, a Democrat from New York, tells TIME. “I will look into them and I’m sure the U.S. authorities, including the FBI and the Dominican authorities, are looking into the causes of them. I will fight for that to happen, for them to get to the bottom of it.”
Espaillat made the announcement on Wednesday, saying he plans to speak to tourism and government officials to learn the latest details on the headline-making deaths––many of which came after travelers reportedly fell suddenly ill.
The FBI has launched an investigation of the deaths and the US State Dept is monitoring the probe.
The State Dept already had a “level 3—'exercise increased caution’ travel warning on the DR for violent crime, including armed robbery, homicide and sexual assault.
The Dominican Republic's tourism minister said on Friday that if the investigation into the rash of deaths of U.S. tourists finds wrongdoing or negligence, those responsible will face "disciplinary measures to fit their actions."
In an exclusive interview with Fox News, Tourism Minister Francisco Javier Garcia expressed confidence that the deaths were all rooted in natural causes and insisted that it is safe to vacation there.
Garcia stressed that autopsy reports that were done following the deaths of most of the tourists showed that there was nothing nefarious, and acknowledged the toxicological tests the FBI is conducting in its research center in Quantico, Va., in the deaths of three Americans who died in their rooms at Bahia Principe resorts.
The FBI told Fox News on Friday that it has sent a team to the Dominican Republic to investigate the deaths.
Earlier in the day, Garcia held a press conference to make the case that the popular Caribbean vacation spot is safe and that it did not deserve the negative attention triggered by worldwide headlines about the rash of U.S. tourist deaths. The Dominican Republic has signed a $35,000 monthly contract with the New York-based Rubenstein public relations powerhouse to fight the negative publicity.
As Dominican officials tried to quell rising concerns among would-be travelers worldwide about safety there, the State Department on Friday confirmed to Fox News the June 17 death of a New York business owner, Vittorio Caruso, 56, who died after becoming critically ill at the Boca Chica Resort in Santo Domingo.
