Led by Tennessee Senator Marsha Blackburn, Stop Green Lighting Driver Licenses for Illegal Immigrants bill was introduced.  The legislation calls to:

Proposed law would cut off federal grants to states that give drivers licenses to illegal immigrants

“New York’s Green Light Law is detrimental to CBP and ICE.  The information we receive from New York state is vital to our missions, and blocking federal law enforcement officers from accessing it creates a significant threat to both officer and public safety.”

ALBANY — As many as 80,000 people statewide who are living in the country illegally, including 30,000 on Long Island, will be able to obtain valid New York state driver’s licenses beginning Saturday.

Next weekend (12/14/19) New York State will begin issuing driver’s licenses to people who are in the U.S. illegally.

The issue has been controversial since it was first proposed, but what’s known as the “Green Light Law” was passed earlier this year and signed by Gov. Cuomo, making the Empire State the 13th in the country to provide licenses to undocumented immigrants.

Applicants won’t need social security numbers, but they will have to sign an affidavit that they haven’t been issued one.
Unexpired passports from other countries and foreign driver’s licenses will be among the records accepted.

The state will begin issuing the licenses next Saturday.

It’s estimated that as many as 80,000 people in New York may be eligible for the new licenses.

The starting date follows years of conflict and a continuing divide among New Yorkers. Supporters say the law will make roads safer and help immigrant families prosper; opponents call the law nothing less than a tool for terrorists.

The measure, referred to as the Green Light Law, was passed earlier this year and signed by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, making New York the 13th state to provide driver’s licenses to those in the country illegally.

The state will issue only standard driver’s licenses to those immigrants, which means they won’t be able to obtain trucker’s licenses or other commercial licenses. The standard licenses also won’t meet federal standards for identification and so the holders won’t be able to use them to board airplanes or enter federal facilities. Under the law, these licenses also “shall be visually identical” to standard licenses issued to U.S. citizens.
