WASHINGTON - Senator Bob Menendez, a senior member of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, wrote to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo asking him to use diplomatic tools to support democratic governance in the Dominican Republic while President Danilo Medina seeks to modify the constitution of his country to run for an unprecedented third term.
Senator Menéndez wrote: "It must be a major force in the world, the United States must demonstrate its commitment to the defense of democratic norms and can not ignore when a president tries to extend his passage through power modifying the Constitution of his country for your own convenience ».
In the letter addressed to the Secretary of State, Senator Menéndez said that he is deeply concerned about the efforts that the government party is making to modify the constitution so that President Danilo Medina can be re-elected for the second time in a row.

pidiéndole que use herramientas diplomáticas para apoyar la gobernabilidad democrática en la República Dominicana mientras el presidente Danilo Medina busca modificar la constitución de su país para postularse a un tercer mandato sin precedentes.
El senador Menéndez escribió: «Debe ser una fuerza importante en el mundo, los Estados Unidos deben demostrar su compromiso con la defensa de las normas democráticas y no pueden ignorar cuando un presidente trata de extender su paso por el poder modificando la Constitución de su país para su propia conveniencia».
En la carta dirigida al Secretario de Estado, el senador Menéndez expresó que que está profundamente preocupado por los esfuerzos que está haciendo el partido de gobierno para modificar la constitución con el fin de que el presidente Danilo Medina se reelija por segunda vez consecutiva.
